Your family is the mission.
Your HBCU is the reason.
H&S Capital Enterprise exists to close the wealth gap for the HBCU community — alumni, families, faculty, and business owners connected to any of the 99 accredited Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the U.S. and U.S. Virgin Islands. Everything we build, we build for you.
Building Wealth. Supporting HBCUs. Closing the Gap.
Three commitments that shape every plan we build.
We Teach Before We Transact
An informed HBCU family is an empowered HBCU family. Every engagement starts with education — the Four Enemies of Money, how carriers work, how tax-advantaged strategies compound — long before any product is discussed.
We Protect Family Legacy
We are licensed Life & Health strategists working with A-rated carriers (Transamerica, Nationwide, National Life Group). We will never place a product with your family that we would not place with ours. That is the H&S standard.
We Champion HBCU Community
We serve the HBCU community before we serve any quarterly target. A portion of our impact returns to the 99 accredited institutions through the 99 Forward initiative — scholarships, on-campus literacy programs, and member-directed giving.
Two HBCU-rooted leaders. One shared calling.
Jamel Henderson
Educator · Builder · Associate Alumnus, Coppin State University
Jamel Henderson is an educator by training and a creator by nature. Over 25 years, he’s taught across Philadelphia, New Orleans, Washington DC, Baltimore City, and Baltimore County — the heart of HBCU country.
As an associate alumnus of Coppin State University, he is committed to serving the institution and its community. Today he leads H&S Capital’s strategist development and family-first strategist practice.
Kem Henderson
Operations · Systems · Virginia Union Alumna
Kem Henderson is a Virginia Union alumna and the Director of Technology and Program Management at Morgan State University. Her expertise in project management and systems design keeps H&S Capital running at scale.
She brings the HBCU community lens to every operational decision — from how members experience the Wealth Hub to how strategists prepare for family consultations.
“Together, they’re not just serving HBCU families — they’re answering a calling rooted in generations of family connection to these institutions.”
Why we built H&S — and why we’re glad you’re here.
“We didn’t come to this work by accident. We came by classroom, by campus, by family kitchen tables where the math never quite added up.”
Dear friend,
Between the two of us, we’ve spent nearly forty years inside HBCU-adjacent classrooms and on HBCU campuses — teaching the students, running the systems, sitting at the graduations, watching the same graduates walk into adulthood without the wealth-building playbook their non-HBCU peers took for granted. We saw the pattern too many times to ignore it.
HBCUs receive roughly 10% of alumni giving — half the rate of non-HBCU institutions. That gap is not about love for our schools. It is about the wealth gap that starts at the family kitchen table, follows our graduates for a lifetime, and never quite lets our institutions receive what they deserve. We built H&S Capital Enterprise to close that gap — one HBCU family at a time.
If you meet with a strategist from our firm, here is what you can expect: we will listen before we recommend. We will teach before we transact. We will disclose what the carrier pays us before you sign anything. And we will only ever place with your family what we would place with our own. That is not marketing language. It is the standard we operate to, every day, on every call, in every plan.
You do not owe us a policy. You do not owe us a call back. But if you have read this far, we believe you owe your family the conversation. If we are the right fit, we will build a plan that outlives us both. If we are not, we will tell you honestly and point you toward who is.
Thank you for reading — and thank you for whatever you do, every day, to keep our HBCUs strong.
Built in Baltimore. Built for the 99.
H&S Capital Enterprise was founded in Baltimore, Maryland by Jamel and Kem Henderson — two HBCU-rooted leaders who spent decades inside classrooms and campus IT infrastructure watching the same pattern repeat: talented HBCU graduates entering adulthood without the wealth-building playbook their non-HBCU peers took for granted.
HBCUs receive roughly 10% of alumni giving — half the rate of non-HBCU institutions at 20%. That gap is not accidental. It is the compounded result of a wealth gap that starts at the family kitchen table and follows our graduates for a lifetime.
We were built to close that gap, one HBCU family at a time. Today we serve members and families across Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York, with expansion into Delaware, Virginia, Washington DC, and North Carolina underway in Q3–Q4 2026.
The mission is simple. When HBCU families build wealth, HBCUs thrive.
Our Mission
To close the wealth gap by serving HBCU families with the financial guidance, education, and tools they deserve — so that more wealth stays in our community, returns to our institutions, and funds the next generation of leaders.
Our Promise
Every plan we build, every dollar we protect, and every conversation we have is rooted in HBCU heritage. We will never place with your family what we would not place with ours. That is the H&S standard.
How H&S Gets Paid.
Trust starts with knowing how your strategist earns a living. We answer that question in the first conversation — and we’ll answer it here first.
H&S Capital Enterprise is compensated by our A-rated carrier partners — Transamerica, Nationwide, and National Life Group — when a family we serve chooses to implement a life-insurance, annuity, or supplemental-health strategy through us.
We do not charge asset-under-management (AUM) fees. We do not charge for the initial strategy conversation. We do not earn referral kickbacks from any third party. And we do not place a product with your family that we would not place with ours.
Every product we place is disclosed in writing before you sign anything — including how the strategist is compensated, what the carrier pays, and what alternatives were considered. This is the H&S plan-before-product methodology.
Transparency is not a marketing line. It is the operating standard.
Carrier-compensated. Family-first. Fully disclosed.
- Paid by carriers, not by youCompensation flows from A-rated carriers when a strategy is implemented.
- No AUM fees. No hidden costs. No percentage-of-assets billing. No initial-consult fee.
- Written disclosure, alwaysEvery recommendation is documented before you sign.
- Plan before productEducation first, options second, decisions on your timeline.
Three promises built into the model.
No pressure to implement.
Because the initial strategy conversation is free, walking away costs you nothing. We would rather earn nothing today than earn your family’s trust the wrong way.
No product before plan.
You will never be quoted a policy before we have understood your family’s cash flow, goals, and existing coverage. The plan drives the product — never the reverse.
No conflicts hidden.
Carrier compensation is written on the recommendation, alongside the alternatives we considered and why we chose the one we did. If the math doesn’t serve your family, we say so.
